I had to buy a double-ender U joint to go around the frame and make the tight turn to hook up with the steering rack. Any time you use more then two U joints in a row (three in my case), you have to install a bearing to keep the steering shaft from "rubber-banding" on you, which will render your steering useless. First I notched the steering shaft to fit the "Double D" in the top U joint. Would have been a great job for a band saw. I don't have a band saw.
I would mock up the steering first and then figure out exactly where the mount should be. I know this sounds like a set up for another story of how I screwed up, but it worked out great! Don't worry, I'll screw something else up. Like, there's a ton of body work to do, man.
Here looks good. I'll put it right here. Now all I need to do is figure out how.
I fabbed this mount up using the leftovers from the tranny crossmember I made. And it works!
There's a bolt you can't see well that is welded to the top face of the bracket, and then the other bolt locks the heim bearing in place. I welded the living crud out of this thing! It looked like a glowin' mound of superheated radioactive Bubble Yum.
It looks like headers will fit in there, right? I have a Gennie shifter on the way, and it's mid-February. I think I can get her going this spring. Knock on wood.
